Make a Silica Dehydrator

DIY Silica Dehydrator Bags for Storage.
Author Homestead Lady

Equipment

  • Scissors

Ingredients

  • Silica Crystals
  • Muslin Bag or Square and String
  • Tray

Instructions

  • Place silica crystals* into the muslin bag and draw the string tightly closed.
  • Similarly, place crystals in the middle of a muslin square and gather the fabric around the crystals. Tie a string at the top to secure the crystals inside the bundle of fabric.
  • Place the bag onto a tray with sides.
  • Silica can easily be recharged, once it’s reached its considerable water holding capacity of 40% of its weight, by placing it on a baking sheet in an oven set to 250°F/121°C for several hours.

Notes

Silica crystals can be purchased in the dried flower section of your local craft store.
Silica, though it holds moisture in its crystalline structure, doesn’t become wet so you needn’t worry about creating a pool of water in your tray.
Purchase silica crystals with humidity indicators that turn color once they’ve reached their capacity.
Most modern homes that are regulated by central heat and air systems aren’t really in need of humidity control. However, humidity may be of concern for those living in older homes or in particularly humid areas like the American southern states.
